The Myth of 'Green' Cleaning Products: What You Need to Know

A recent study published in CHEMOSPHERE found that our household cleaning products release hundreds of hazardous compounds that can remain in the air for many months.

Conducted by scientists in the United States, the study examined 30 commonly used cleaning products. Both regular and "green" products were analyzed to determine if one type was safer for use than the other.

After spraying the cleaning products inside a chamber, the researchers monitored the air for four hours. The findings showed that both regular and green products emitted hazardous substances. However, the green cleaning products released fewer dangerous chemicals compared to their regular counterparts. Moreover, the researchers found that these harmful chemicals could remain in the air for months. "This study serves as a wake-up call for consumers, researchers, and regulators to become more aware of the potential risks associated with the multitude of chemicals entering our air," the researchers stated.

Dr. Marina Tzidkin-Tamir, a senior pharmacologist and infection expert, explained to News 12 that the identified substances release toxic materials into the room's air, potentially causing various illnesses, including asthma, cancer, and other chronic diseases, especially when inhaled over extended periods. She advised against using chemicals for cleaning altogether, but if one decides to use certain products, she recommended opting for bleach in its different forms and always cleaning with gloves and a mask. "But the best way is simply to clean with entirely natural materials like baking soda and vinegar," she said.
