Strawberries, one of the most delightful fruits, are packed with numerous health benefits. They support the immune system, are rich in antioxidants, reduce inflammation, promote brain health, and alleviate symptoms of depression.

1. Rich in Vitamin C

Strawberries contain a significant amount of vitamin C, which supports immune cells by protecting them from damage during an immune response. Additionally, vitamin C positively impacts the immune system through the function of white blood cells.

One cup of whole strawberries provides 85 milligrams of vitamin C, which is more than 100% of the recommended daily value for women and about 94% for men.

2. Anti-Inflammatory

Studies have shown that consuming strawberries reduces signs of inflammation such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. Strawberries are a rich source of polyphenols, important chemicals found in plants that can protect cells from inflammatory damage.

3. Heart Protection

Some studies suggest that strawberries can positively affect endothelial function (cells lining blood vessels). Additionally, strawberries help reduce LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and increase HDL cholesterol. Lowering LDL levels is one way to protect against heart disease.

4. Supporting Brain Health

Strawberries are a good source of powerful antioxidants and polyphenols, aiding brain health. New research found that one of the factors in cognitive decline and the development of Alzheimer's dementia is not consuming foods rich in antioxidants and polyphenols.

5. Aiding Digestive Health

Strawberries are rich in insoluble dietary fibers. These fibers pass through the digestive system intact, adding bulk to stool, which helps maintain regular digestion.

6. Easing Depression Symptoms

Strawberries are a good source of folate and contain high amounts of folic acid. Several studies have indicated that people diagnosed with depression had lower folic acid levels compared to those without depression.

7. Lowering Blood Pressure

Numerous studies have pointed to a connection between berry consumption, including strawberries, and a reduced risk of high blood pressure. The authors note that consuming blueberries and strawberries may lower blood pressure due to the various flavonoids found in these fruits.

Important to Know

It is worth noting that strawberries are prone to infestation, with bugs hiding in the bumps. It's important to buy fruit with a trusted certification and to clean thoroughly before eating:

Soak the strawberries in soapy water, then rinse and scrub with a soft sponge or toothbrush. For frozen strawberries, scrubbing should be done while still frozen because they soften when thawed, making them harder to scrub.
