Most people will experience lower back pain, especially as they age. It's estimated that 4 out of 5 individuals will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. So, how can we alleviate this common issue?
According to a new study conducted in Finland involving 22 men and women struggling with lower back pain, horseback riding therapy (EFT) has been shown to improve daily functioning and ease discomfort for sufferers. The researchers evaluated the effect of EFT on four parameters: perceived physical performance, pain threshold, pain acceptance, depression, and quality of life.
The new research from the University of Eastern Finland demonstrated that horseback riding is beneficial in relieving lower back pain. Over a period of three months, horseback riding enthusiasts reported decreased pain levels and, at the same time, improvements in daily functioning.

Additionally, improvements were observed in other health areas such as sleep quality, the ability to bend forward, and prolonged standing.
Moreover, as physical activity gradually increased, it appeared the pain threshold of sufferers decreased, while their participation in social activities increased. After the three-month period, there was a six-month follow-up, during which only two patients returned to the pain clinic.
In interviews conducted during the follow-up period, participants emphasized the physical, psychological, and social impacts of horseback riding, demonstrating the significant ramifications for the rehabilitation process.
