This week on her 103FM radio show, dietitian Dr. Maya Roseman tackled the concerns about salmon, following a study published last summer highlighting potential health risks. A listener asked which fish are safe to eat, excluding salmon. Roseman inquired why this fish was singled out, and the listener explained reading "all sorts of terrible things in a newspaper study."
Firstly, Roseman noted that fish are not essential for a complete diet. As a vegetarian who hasn't eaten fish in years, she stated, "You don't need to eat fish to get what your body requires. We have quality proteins in soy, tofu, cheese, and dairy products. Vitamin B12 is also present in eggs and dairy, and omega-3s can be found in walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds," she explained.
Roseman then addressed the study, telling the concerned listener, "You can find good and bad about any type of fish, or any food you consume. If you look hard enough, you'll find something, especially about animal products."
Roseman categorized fish into two groups: farmed and wild-caught, explaining the differences. "Farmed fish, which live in warm waters, have less omega-3 compared to wild fish from deep, cooler waters. However, farmed fish are raised in controlled environments without waste found in the sea, making them a lower health risk, despite having less omega-3." She suggested diversifying fish consumption just like with fruits and oils.
In conclusion, Roseman advised the listener, "I'm not certain that one article should dictate your choices. It's wise to read and critique, but remember, it's just one study. Can you dismiss something because of it? I'm not sure, but awareness is always beneficial. You should consider the whole picture and decide what makes sense. I've been a dietitian for 33 years, and I know many people who have eaten salmon for years and lead very healthy lives."
