Igniting the Flame: 7 Ways to Light Up the Lives of Others

Discover how to bring the Lag BaOmer fire into everyday life.

#VALUE!

Lag BaOmer, the holiday of bonfires and light, invites us to look beyond the physical flames and reflect on the inner light we can each shine into the world. Just as a small bonfire can light up a dark space and warm everyone around it, so too can we—through our everyday actions—be a source of light, warmth, and hope for those around us.

1. The Light of True Listening

In a world full of noise and haste, the ability to truly listen is a rare gift. True listening isn’t just about hearing words—it is being fully present for another person. When we put our phone aside, make eye contact, and listen without judgment or the immediate urge to solve or advise—we bring light into a person's life.

Sometimes, a person in distress doesn't need wise advice, but to be seen, heard or validated. By holding space in this way, we create a safe environment for the other person.

2. The Light of Giving Without Expectation

One of the purest ways to spread light is through giving without expecting anything in return. When the recipient doesn’t know who the giver is, the act comes from a place of pure love.

This could be an anonymous food delivery to a struggling family, a hidden donation to charity, helping an elderly neighbor, or leaving an encouraging note on a coworker’s desk. Such acts create a double light—both in the heart of the receiver and in the giver, who experiences the joy of selfless giving.

3. The Light in a Kind Word

Our words are like embers—they can burn or warm. A kind word, a sincere compliment, or encouragement at the right moment can illuminate someone’s path for a long time. Jewish tradition emphasizes the power of speech and encourages us not only to avoid harmful language, but to actively use words to create good.

Adopting a simple habit such as saying something honest and positive to each person we meet, can change the atmosphere around us as well as how we see the world. A specific, authentic compliment (“I noticed how you helped the new colleague adjust”) is far more powerful than a general one (“You’re nice”).

4. The Light of Acceptance and Inclusion

Just as a bonfire shines on everyone who gathers around it without discrimination, we can be a source of light by accepting and embracing those who are different from us. The Torah repeatedly emphasizes the importance of loving and respecting the stranger, the outsider, the different.

True inclusion begins with examining our own assumptions and biases and recognizing that every person is created in the image of G-d. When we accept others who may think, look, believe, or function differently—we ignite a light of mutual respect that can brighten an entire society.

5. The Light of Gratitude

Gratitude shifts our attention from what is missing to what is present, from the negative to the positive. When we practice gratitude, we not only uplift ourselves, but also radiate light to those around us.

We can adopt a simple habit by writing down three things we’re grateful for each day, or expressing our thanks out loud to others. When we say “thank you” specifically (“Thank you for listening when I needed to talk”), we brighten the recipient’s day and strengthen our connection.

6. The Light of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is one of the most liberating powers we have. When we forgive others or ourselves, we release a heavy burden and make space for new light.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean that what happened was okay, but that we choose not to continue carrying the pain and resentment. It is an active decision that frees us, and allows healing and renewal. Like the purifying fire of the bonfire, forgiveness cleanses the heart and opens the door to a fresh start.

7. The Light of Passing the Torch

When we teach others to be bearers of light through personal example, encouragement, or educating our children, we multiply the light in the world. One candle can light countless others without diminishing its own flame. Likewise, our good deeds can inspire others, who inspire others in turn, creating a chain of light that reaches farther than we can imagine.

With this approach, the Lag BaOmer bonfire is more than a one-time event—it becomes a lasting fire in our hearts. A fire that lights our path and the path of others, reminding us of the power within to spread light in the world.
