The Anticipated War Before Redemption: What Awaits Us?
Prophecies suggest a looming dramatic conflict that may only last seconds but could alter the course of history. What does it mean for us, and how might life change afterwards?

Many books have been written about the War of Gog and Magog, with numerous scholars exploring this subject. Despite differing opinions, the consensus in Judaism is that a severe conflict is expected before the arrival of the Messiah, after which Israel will hold a special place in a new era. However, the exact details and timing remain uncertain; it could happen tomorrow or in fifty years. Rabbi Pinchas Badush explains, "One cannot ignore that the events described in the holy Zohar are beginning to manifest. 'The sons of Ishmael will incite the world to war,' we see a global opposition to Israel. Some prophecies suggest the King of Persia waging war against the world, and Iran’s rapid militarization is evident."
Is the War of Gog and Magog a Nuclear Conflict?
Rabbi Isaac Gabbay adds, "The Gaon of Vilna stated that Gog and Magog would last 9 seconds, which seemed odd in an age of swords and shields. Today, with nuclear capabilities, a short war of buttons makes sense. Yet, the Rambam notes that we may not understand these prophecies until they occur. Whether redemption is 'in its time' or 'swiftly,' remains to be seen." The rabbi highlights, "The prophecies are many, but the principle is that good prophecies like the Redemption will come to pass, whereas severe ones can be altered through repentance."
Where Does Israel Fit In?
"It is written that they will come against us, but Israel will not have to fight. 'Hashem shall fight for you, and you shall hold your peace,' it says."
Will This Prelude the Messiah's Coming?
"It will be part of the unfolding process leading to the Messiah’s arrival, with open miracles of greater magnitude than even the Exodus from Egypt."
Rabbi Gabbay further states, "The Malbim says calamity will start from the north, as it did with the destruction of the Temple. Edom (the U.S.) is said to go to war with Islam, eventually having its leader align with Islam, seen symbolically in President Obama."
Rabbi Yitzhak Finger concludes, "It's clear we're nearing a more powerful conflict than ever seen before. Some view World Wars I and II as parts of Gog and Magog, but the final part will converge on Jerusalem—a city all major religions prize. Given only 230 years remain in the sixth millennium for the Messiah’s absolute arrival, significant events like the Resurrection, the Messiah's arrival, the Temple’s rebuilding, and Gog and Magog must occur within that timeframe."
What About the Unity between Muslims and Christians Against Us?
"Their alliance, dangerous both physically and spiritually, has historical precedents—Esau married Machalat, Haman’s alliance with Ahasuerus, and the Grand Mufti's ties with Hitler. Some suggest it is embodied in Obama, who is Christian yet Muslim. Entirely, it's a troublesome unity expected to lead to the final war. Our sages recommend focusing on Torah study and acts of kindness for salvation."
