There are countless stories of clinical death online, but Velma Thomas's tale from the U.S. stands out.
Officially, she set a world record for the longest time declared dead before reviving—17 hours in total.
It all began after Thomas suffered a heart attack at home in 2008.
Rushed to the hospital by her son and his wife, Thomas experienced two more heart attacks while hospitalized, requiring doctors to place her on life support. "Her heart stopped a total of three times," explained her doctor, Kevin Eggleston. "Despite our rescue efforts and attempts to lower her body temperature, our efforts failed, and we were forced to declare her dead."
Her son, Tim, who stayed by her side throughout the hospitalization, recounted how he remained hopeful until the last moments. "I reached the conclusion she wouldn't survive and decided to donate her organs," he recalled. "I knew the doctors had done everything they could, and there was nothing more to do. I found a sense of peace, knowing I made the right decision. Her skin was hard, and her hands and fingers had shriveled. There really was no life there."
Tim said a tearful goodbye to his mother and left the hospital.
Just 10 minutes later, his phone rang, and he froze upon hearing the voice speaking to him. It was the nurse from the hospital he had just left, telling him his mother had woken up and was asking for him.
"It was unbelievable. She had been taken off life support, the doctors were preparing for her organ donation, and suddenly she woke up. It was... there are no words, just none," recounted Tim, his voice shaking.
"There are things we as doctors and nurses can't always explain, and I think this is exactly one of those cases," said Dr. Eggleston. "We witnessed a living miracle right before our eyes. Velma showed signs of life 10 minutes after we disconnected her from life support and were prepping for organ donation. In all my years as a doctor, I never believed something like this could happen, and then it did."
