  1. Your brain makes up only 2% of your body weight, but it uses more oxygen than any other organ. That’s why it’s the first to be affected when oxygen is low. Just seven seconds without oxygen can cause fainting. Four minutes can cause brain death.
  2. Each brain cell can hold as much information as an encyclopedia. While scientists haven’t measured it exactly, it’s believed that your brain can store around a thousand terabytes of information, about the same as 15 national libraries.
  3. 80% of your brain is made of water. So staying hydrated isn’t just good for your body, it helps your brain, too.
  4. Your brain is actually more active at night. While you’re asleep, your brain is busy organizing your thoughts, processing your day, and getting ready for tomorrow.
  5. Your Intestines: Home to 400 Types of Bacteria
  6. Inside your intestines live about 400 different types of bacteria. Many of them are good for you and help keep your digestion healthy.
  7. Every square centimeter of your skin has about 15 million bacteria on it. Don’t worry, most of them are completely harmless and even helpful.
  8. Every three to four days, your stomach makes a brand-new lining. This protects it from its own strong acids.
  9. Your heart is incredibly strong. It pumps blood with so much pressure that it could squirt up to 30 feet! It works nonstop, which is also why cancer rarely happens in the heart.
  10. It Takes 200 Muscles to Take One Step
  11. Your body creates about 180 million red blood cells every single hour.
  12. Taking just one step uses around 200 different muscles working together.
  13. When a baby is born, its body releases a huge amount of adrenaline, about double what someone has during a heart attack! This helps clear the baby’s lungs so they can breathe.
  14. The placenta is an amazing organ that grows with the baby during pregnancy. It feeds and protects the baby, acts like lungs and kidneys, and even keeps the baby’s blood separate from the mother’s. It’s also the only organ that leaves the body after doing its job.
  15. If a pregnant mother’s organ gets hurt, the baby sends special stem cells to help heal it.
  16. Fingerprints appear on a baby by the third month of pregnancy and they usually stay the same for life.
  17. If you lined up all the blood vessels in your body, they would stretch about 100,000 kilometers!
  18. Every minute, 300 million cells in your body die in a natural process called apoptosis. This keeps things running smoothly. In cancer, this process stops working, which causes harmful cells to grow and spread.
  19. Laughter is good for you! It lowers stress hormones and boosts serotonin, which helps your mood and immune system. Six-year-olds laugh around 300 times a day. Grown-ups? Only between 15 and 100 times. So go ahead and laugh a little more!
