#VALUE!
Fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, dill, and basil bring color, flavor, and life to your food. But if you’ve ever bought a bunch only to find it wilted the next day, you’re not alone. Professional chefs have their secrets to keeping herbs fresh and you can use them too. Here are six easy ways to make your herbs last longer:
1. Paper Towel and Bag Method
Gently wash the herbs, dry them lightly on a paper towel, then wrap them in a slightly damp paper towel. Place the bundle in a sealed plastic bag and store it in the fridge. This can keep herbs fresh for weeks.
2. Water Jar Like a Flower Vase
Cut a bit off the stem ends and place the herbs in a jar with water just like a bouquet. Loosely cover the top with a plastic bag. This works great for parsley, dill, and basil. Just remember to change the water every two days.
3. Storage Box with Paper Towels
Line the bottom of a plastic box with dry paper towel, lay the herbs flat, and cover with another piece of paper towel. Close the lid and store in the fridge. This is great if you use herbs often.
4. Freeze in Olive Oil
Chop the herbs and place them in an ice cube tray. Pour olive oil over them and freeze. When cooking, just drop a cube straight into the pan—easy and flavorful.
5. Hang to Dry Naturally
Herbs like thyme, rosemary, and oregano can be dried. Tie them in small bunches and hang them upside down in a dry, airy space. After about two weeks, store the dried leaves in a sealed jar.
6. Don’t Wash Until You're Ready
If you’re not using the herbs right away, it’s best not to wash them. Extra moisture can make them spoil faster. Keep them dry in a box or bag until you’re ready to use them.
