Antisemitism in Italy? Israeli Tourists Ousted from Restaurant

An Israeli couple was ejected from a restaurant last weekend in the historic center of Naples. According to the pair, the restaurant owner, Nives Monda, a local resident supportive of Gaza, displayed antisemitic behavior driven by political motives and expelled them from the premises.

The incident was captured on video by the couple and widely shared on social media. "We experienced antisemitism firsthand," said tourist Gili Moses to the Italian newspaper "Il Mattino." She added, "We never imagined this could happen in Naples, a wonderful city where freedom and love are in the air."

Faced with a wave of thousands of negative reactions online and in the media, the restaurant owner presented a completely different version and threatened legal action. "We are the real victims," she claimed. "We take responsibility only for choosing to take a stand - they rudely attacked me, accused me of antisemitism, shouted, and filmed me with their cell phone."

The couple subsequently filed a police complaint citing unlawful discrimination, and the matter was promptly addressed by the Israeli Embassy in Rome. The Foreign Ministry responded: "This is a serious incident, which was immediately addressed by the Israeli Embassy in Rome with relevant local authorities. Among other actions, the embassy contacted the Friendship Association in Naples and a city council representative, cooperating to file a complaint with the local police and issue an official statement in the local media regarding the owner's disgraceful conduct. Given the severity of the case, authorities are considering further actions against the restaurant."
