Reunited After 37 Years: Parents Find Their Long Lost Son

A couple in China finally experienced a happy ending - 37 years after their son was given away by his grandmother, the ecstatic parents were reunited with their long-lost son.

In 1986, just a day old, the baby was handed over by his paternal grandmother. Believing the couple was too poor to raise another child, she gave him to a man named Zhao and his family, reportedly for a payment.

The parents were completely unaware of the surrender and did not agree with the grandmother's decision. She later explained that she acted on their behalf, thinking it would be too challenging for them to care for another child since they already had two sons.

According to local media, after the grandmother passed away, the father Li and his wife spent three decades traveling across the country searching for their beloved son. This past February, a DNA match was found between the couple and a man named Fang in Zaozhuang, Shandong Province, according to the Interior Security Bureau's database.

In 2009, Chinese police established a large DNA database by collecting blood samples from couples whose children had disappeared or children who were given up for adoption and wanted to find their biological parents. The police in Shaanxi requested additional samples from Li, his wife, and Fang to confirm the biological parentage of the relinquished child.

Earlier this month, accompanied by officers, Fang met his parents in Weinan, where he was born 37 years earlier. "Son, Dad and Mom are sorry for you. How have your life been all these years?" the couple tearfully said, hugging Fang tightly and holding his hands.

Their reunion video posted online in China sparked reactions of joy but also anger. "The grandmother was so cruel. She abandoned her grandson. It's hard to understand her actions," one user commented on Weibo. Others focused on Fang's demeanor: "The son looked embarrassed at the reunion. He has no feelings for his biological parents, who didn’t raise him," another said.
