Roger Waters, the lead singer of Pink Floyd, is a well-known figure in Israel. For many years, his songs had a wide audience, but now, due to his recent antisemitic remarks and attempts to downplay the massacres committed by Hamas terrorists in southern Israel, some in Israel are calling for an end to his music's airplay.
Waters has expressed criticism against Israel on multiple occasions, and in a recent interview with journalist Piers Morgan, he denied the massacres, stating that "Israelis told lies about burnt babies." In response to his statements, there is now a call in Israel to boycott his music, preventing him from benefitting from royalties.
Hagit Pe'er, head of Na'amat, reached out to radio stations in Israel, stating: "Stop playing Roger Waters' songs - we should not give a platform to Holocaust deniers. His recent remarks and claims that Hamas did not commit massacres are just a continuation of his many past statements rooted in antisemitism and pure malice. The principled and appropriate action is to boycott his works and him personally, and certainly not to be partners in the royalties he earns from each play of his songs."
One station, eco99fm, has already announced it will cease to play his songs. "Since the war began, with Waters' previous remarks, we almost completely reduced airplay of his songs and those of his acclaimed band 'Pink Floyd,' only playing them in special dedications and requests. We were horrified by the interview and will not play his songs in the foreseeable future," they stated.
From the Kan Broadcasting Corporation, it was said: "Waters' statements are outrageous and unacceptable, and we completely reject them. In their work, Kan's music editors consider all relevant factors related to the spirit of the time and the identity of the performers. There is no doubt that in editing programs on Kan 88, these shocking remarks will also be taken into account."
