How often do you wash your towels each week? Once a week or perhaps even more frequently? It's likely that you wash towels less often than your clothes. Some people wash them just once a month or even less. But even when they do, it's uncertain if they're doing it correctly.

It's important to note that every time you use a towel, dead skin cells remain on it, making it crucial to wash them to avoid bacterial buildup. Many experts suggest washing towels at least once or twice a week.

A recent survey revealed some concerning findings: some people believe it's acceptable to wash towels once a year, even though a clean towel itself can harbor a high number of bacteria. It's estimated that millions of bacteria can be present on a towel after just one use.

Laundry expert Alwyn Chiblak busted a few myths about towel washing that you should be aware of. According to him, an average towel lasts between two to five years only. Here are the myths he debunked:

Do towels need cold water? Cold water is great for laundry but not for towels. Only hot water will kill the bacteria. He explained that "hot water, usually at a temperature of about 60 degrees Celsius, is more effective."

More detergent is better for towels? It turns out too much detergent can ruin them. The expert said, "It's a very common mistake. Overusing detergent can actually worsen the condition of the towels by creating residues that harden them and damage their absorption ability."

Fabric softener makes towels softer? Fabric softener coats the fibers with a substance that reduces absorption over time. According to the expert, it's possible to skip the fabric softener and add half a cup of white vinegar to the machine.

Can towels wait in the laundry basket? The expert asserts that "they develop an unpleasant smell and become a breeding ground for bacteria and mildew. Towels should be hung to dry fully after each use."

Is it okay to wash towels with the rest of the laundry? The expert advises against tossing towels in with all the other clothes.

Is it possible to use a new towel immediately? It's always a good idea to wash new towels before their first use. A laundry expert explained in the Daily Mirror that "washing new towels before their first use is a simple way to extend their lifespan and ensure they are clean and safe."

Is drying towels on radiators or heaters effective? Even on rainy days, it's best to avoid this. Remember, it also poses a safety risk.
