The horrific attack by Hamas on October 7, where entire families were brutally murdered, hit the Zuaretz family hard. Aili Barem, the nephew of Guy Zuaretz, Yael Bar Zohar’s husband, was killed.
For the first time since the tragedy, Bar Zohar returned to co-host alongside Niv Raskin. "It's very difficult, and it was inevitable we would discuss it, which immediately brings up emotions, so I apologize," she said while overcome with tears. "Aili is the son of Guy’s sister—our nephew. Sometimes when I referred to him as 'Guy's nephew,' he'd quickly correct me, saying, 'What do you mean his nephew? Aren’t we family? Am I not your nephew?' Guy and I have been together for 20 years, so for me, he really is like my own blood. I remember him as the sweetest child who grew up—I want to say into a man—but I feel he was taken too soon, at just 27."
"At first, we hoped he might be in hiding," she recounted. "He hadn't mentioned where he was going. He was in the car with two other friends, and one friend’s mother called me to see if Guy's sister had spoken to Aili, as they lost contact. She’d spoken to them twice, and we weren’t even in the country, so we didn’t understand the magnitude of the situation. We then, of course, plunged into this nightmare, searching for them.
"They just saw rockets, unaware that there were terrorists on the way. They jumped into the car and tried to drive off, likely one of the first cars attacked. They have friends who were several cars behind them and narrowly escaped by turning around. These friends recounted the final moments. We cling to the hope that they were unaware for too long and that it was quick. We miss him terribly. All the victims of this heinous massacre – it’s incomprehensible, it’s tough, I’m shaking."
