Esther Strauss, a flight attendant for a Dutch airline, spends plenty of time in hotels around the globe. This means she knows all the insider secrets and isn’t afraid to reveal them in a new video.

In a viral video she posted, Strauss shares that to make the most of your hotel stay, there are a few things you should do. The first tip is to use hangers to hold the curtains in place. This way, you won’t be blinded by the strong sunlight in the morning.

The second tip recommends using your USB cable to charge your mobile devices through the room’s television. This comes in handy if you forget your charger adapter or it gets damaged.

The third tip suggests using shower caps to cover your shoes during packing. This protects your clothes from dirty shoes, especially if you don’t have extra plastic bags on hand. Strauss also advises using shower caps to cover the remote control, as studies show remotes are not the most hygienic items and can harbor bacteria—even at home, let alone in hotels.

An additional and perhaps the most intriguing tip is to place a shoe in the safe. Why? Because then you’re less likely to leave the hotel without checking what you’ve left in the safe. Guests often store valuables like cash and passports in the safe and forget them during checkout. If you put one shoe inside, you’re unlikely to leave without it. This could be any important item like a jacket or phone, just something you definitely won’t leave without.
