The internet is filled with heartwarming stories of life-saving acts, but this might be one of the most unique stories you'll come across: Nancy Blohr is a kindergarten teacher at a private school in the United States.
She made headlines after performing an extraordinary gesture for a child who arrived at her class feeling downhearted. "He didn't want to play with any of the other children and sat in the corner the whole time," she recalls. Nancy was worried. She wasn't accustomed to seeing four-year-old Camden, known for being energetic and social with leadership qualities, behaving this way.
"I decided to speak with him privately to see if something had happened at home," Nancy says with a trembling voice during a TV interview, adding that she will never forget that moment. "He looked at me with the saddest eyes and told me he was upset because of his dad. He said his dad was very sick."
Upon hearing the word 'very' from the little boy, she understood that this was not an ordinary illness, so she immediately contacted his father, Darreld Peterson. Indeed, in their conversation, he revealed that he was suffering from severe kidney disease, which meant his kidneys were functioning at only 20%.
"I was very upset after our conversation. Although he was undergoing dialysis treatment, I realized the doctors did not offer much hope. We'd seen him at the kindergarten a few times, and he looked very thin, but I hadn't imagined it was due to some illness," Nancy explains.
No wonder poor Camden arrived at kindergarten so upset.
She wanted to help Camden and thought a lot about how to do so, when a brilliant idea struck her — though it wasn't the kind of idea one might expect, like babysitting Camden while his dad was in treatment.
Nancy offered one of her kidneys to Darreld, surprising him and everyone around her. "People said to me, 'Why do you need this headache? Sure, it's painful and sad, but are you out of your mind?'"
However, Nancy isn't one to listen to such noise. On the contrary. Those voices only made her expedite the process and undergo all the tests to check if she was a match for donating a kidney to Darreld — and lo and behold, she was indeed a match. "When we found out I was a match, I was thrilled. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't been a match for him. I wanted so much for him to live for Camden, and I know how lengthy the waitlists for a kidney can be."
Darreld was elated. "I feel so fortunate that she reached out to check on me the first time, and I feel so blessed that she was found to be a match. She gave me another chance at life, and I wish there were more people like her," he concludes, adding that Nancy didn't just save him but his son as well.
