Just a year ago, Harriet Peacock, a mother of two from the UK, was struggling with extreme obesity.
Anyone who saw her on the street couldn't help but turn back for another glance. She weighed over 440 pounds, and every outing was an indescribable ordeal. "People wouldn't stop laughing at me. They stared, pointed, said ugly things, and more than once, even spat at me and threw things. The insults I endured were devastating. Once, a group of teenagers pushed me, and I fell on the sidewalk. It was incredibly humiliating, but even more so that I couldn't stand up by myself for a long time until someone walked by and helped me," Harriet recalls.
Since COVID-19, her situation worsened. "I've always dealt with being overweight, and it's always been hard. But since the pandemic, I just couldn't bear it anymore. I would sit at home, eating nearly non-stop. I was angry with myself afterwards, but felt like I had no choice. I was hurt and frustrated with my situation, and could only find comfort in food."
Of course, the eating habits she developed over the years took a toll on her mood. "The more I ate, the angrier and more bitter I became. The worst part was not knowing how to escape this and make a change. At my teaching job, I would order massive amounts of Chinese food, telling my colleagues it was also for others. The quantities were insane, and I ate it all by myself."
Then, one day, she met a doctor who told her simply: "Eat less and exercise more, and the change will come."
Reflecting on the doctor's words, she realized she needed to do something different. "I joined a program called Slimming World, which helps people like me adopt a lifestyle they never had before. It was the best gift I ever gave myself," she shares, describing a lifestyle that includes a revolutionary change, including a new perspective on exercise. She had to work out three times a week without exceptions."Sure, it was tough at first. I had to swap candies for fresh fruits and greasy food for cooked, low-fat meals - but today, just a year later, I'm grateful for it."
"Every change you make in life is hard at first. But our bodies are smarter than we think. We need to insist on the change, and the good results will follow," says Harriet, who has now lost more than half her body weight and weighs just 176 pounds. "Put yourself first, and understand that only you can make this mental shift. Food doesn't have to be our enemy. It can be our best friend if we don't overdo it."
