The internet is buzzing over a video of an American upholsterer who discovered something shocking in a 200-year-old chair he was tasked with restoring.
In the video, the upholsterer can be heard saying, "Okay, this is not propaganda," as he films the chair in question. "I received this chair in my workshop to restore. It belongs to a wealthy family from North Georgia in the United States. They wanted it refurbished and preserved as it's been in their family for generations."
When the upholsterer opened the chair to assess its true condition and begin work, he was horrified to find human hair inside.
He took the chair to experts who confirmed it was indeed human hair, likely belonging to a Black person who was a slave in their master's home. "This is human hair," the upholsterer explains in the video, which has racked up millions of views within a day, as he pulls clumps of hair from the upholstery itself. "Imagine how many slaves were needed to put all this hair in this chair. It's stuffed entirely with human hair. Not horse, cow, or pig hair. No. Human hair. Hair of slaves. Think about that."
More than 1.7 million views have been garnered by the video showcasing the upholsterer's chilling discovery, rapidly flooding the internet with thousands of shocked comments (no fewer than 20,000). Many insisted, "The chair should remain as it is—for everyone to know the horror that was embedded there." Another commenter suggested sending the hair for DNA testing to uncover its exact origins. "I can't even imagine it," read another comment. "It made me feel terrible, but it's important to share this. Only this way will people understand the atrocities of the slavery era in the United States."
