Giving Without a Price Tag: A New Supermarket for Those in Need
Shani and her husband Osher have opened a new supermarket for those in need, giving away products at no cost. Inspired by the COVID-19 crisis, they didn't anticipate such widespread interest: "I had no idea it would create such a stir. It drives you to keep going."

In the heart of Petah Tikva, a new supermarket has recently opened for those in need, where all products are free. The noble initiative is led by Shani Sharvit Shokron and her husband Osher, who originally started the project during the COVID-19 crisis. They began by dedicating a room in their home for food items donated by various people, distributing them to those who came by.
But for Shani, that wasn't enough. She envisioned a large warehouse in a public space where people could come and take what they needed. Recently, she made that dream a reality. The project expanded into a warehouse on Maccabim Street in Petah Tikva, just a year after she expressed that heartfelt wish.
It's akin to a supermarket that includes non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, fruits, vegetables, and more, all given away for free. In an interview with MyNet Petah Tikva, Shani shared that after giving birth to a premature baby in the seventh month, she couldn't have people visiting her home due to the baby's weak immune system and the peak of the pandemic. "I rented the warehouse on Maccabim Street, publicized the initiative, and there was huge interest, but then it waned to a steady group of regulars. Recently, I decided to post more on social media so more people in need could come, and I had no idea it would create such a stir."
Shani received thousands of likes, hundreds of comments, and requests for both help and to contribute. She started a group online, which now has close to 12,000 members. Because of the high demand following the exposure she received, visiting the place currently requires scheduling in advance.
In an interview, Shani said she never imagined it would grow to such a scale, yet always aspired to something big. "It's satisfying, addictive, and it drives you to keep going. There's not a single day where I say 'I'm taking a break.' Even if I want to, I can't because I receive requests and it's impossible to stay indifferent," says Shani.
Regarding reactions from the community, Shani says everyone is supportive, with some asking if it's really real. And what about the time and energy invested? Shani says: "Only strength from Hashem and my husband."
