Brazil: A 44-year-old named Claudio Vieira de Oliveira was born with a rare condition causing severe muscle atrophy. This condition results in his head being positioned behind his back, his arms attached close to his chest, and he moves on his knees. Despite these visual and physical challenges, Claudio has become one of the most sought-after speakers in his country and around the world, precisely because of the obstacles he has overcome in life.
His story made waves in the local media from his birth, and even today, the medical community in his country is astounded by his survival, defying everyone's bleak predictions. "Nobody gave me a chance," he recalls in an interview with the local news channel G1. "All the doctors told my mother that I would survive for a maximum of 24 hours. When they saw that this didn’t happen, they changed their stance and said I would live until seven years old."
According to him, with a lot of help and love from his family, he survived well beyond this and proved to everyone that he could face challenges and live a completely normal life—the evidence being that today he does everything like an ordinary person. "There’s only one thing that really concerns me during this period," he said. "And that’s the outbreak of COVID-19 which has reached massive proportions even in Brazil. I've been isolated at home for a year, and only if there are fewer infections can I return to the halls I used to fill with my lectures. I really miss it," he concludes.
