"For six days work shall be done ... Let them come and make... the Mishkan."
Thirty-nine crafts were forbidden by the Torah on Shabbat. The sages derived this from the juxtaposition of the construction of the Mishkan, which involved 39 crafts, with the commandment to refrain from work on Shabbat.
The evolution of civilization and the migration from rural areas to urban settings have distanced people from the knowledge and practice of traditional crafts that were once widely known.
My travels in less developed countries brought me face-to-face with these disappearing crafts.
The Kathmandu Valley was one place that vividly showcased many of the crafts from the Mishkan, including the craft of nipping.
