The Baby Who Defied the Odds Is a Superman

Their baby was born weighing as much as a Superman action figure. Doctors said he wouldn't survive, but against all odds, he did. Every birthday, his parents recreate that photo next to the Superman doll to remind him of his strength.

In her wildest dreams, Valerie never imagined she would give birth to a baby so tiny and make history. Baby Logan was born with many complications, and the doctors prepared her for the worst. "They told my husband we should prepare to go home without him. Rob and I looked the doctor in the eye and said, 'We're not going anywhere. We're staying, and we're bringing this baby into the world.'

The doctors had no choice but to keep them in the hospital.

Just a day after they were told to prepare for the worst - on July 25, 2016, Valerie gave birth to Logan who, as expected, was rushed to intensive care due to his low weight, heart issues, a urinary tract infection, and two brain hemorrhages.

1.5 kg, the Length of a Superman Toy

"At that point, we were genuinely scared we'd lose him. We honestly thought he didn't stand much of a chance," Rob, Valerie's husband, recalls.

As if that wasn't enough, at just 11 weeks old, Logan underwent laser eye surgery for retinopathy of prematurity, a condition that could have left him blind.

However, Logan didn't give up—against all odds, he returned home with his family.

The baby was photographed next to a Superman toy when he was born, and re-takes the photo each year to show his growth. "We take a birthday picture every year of Logan holding his Superman. It's amazing to see the difference from those early days to now, when he's four," says Valerie. "Back then, he weighed 1.5 kg and was the length of the Superman toy Rob bought for him."

"We have definitely learned to believe in miracles," says Logan's parents. "He came into this world with the lowest chances to survive, but he showed real fighting spirit from day one."

"Even when he weighed only half a kilo, I called him my 'little tough guy'. The doctor would look at me and say, 'Let's see how he does', and I kept telling him: 'He's a tough guy, don't worry about him. He'll make it,'" Rob recalls.
