A Gift of Gratitude: Marine Veteran Receives a Life-Changing Surprise

It happened nine years ago.

Jonathan Blank, 32, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, lost both of his legs while on duty and has since undergone a difficult and lengthy rehabilitation journey.

During his service, Blank was awarded several commendations for bravery in battles against Afghan forces, but after losing his legs, he became increasingly reliant on the generosity of others, including donations that found their way to him through various channels.

That was until one day, when his story caught the attention of actor Gary Sinise.

The gift that Sinise decided to donate—a smart home adapted to Blank's needs—surprised not only him but also the media in the U.S., who hailed Sinise for his generous gesture. "This is such an amazing gift. Even some of my toughest buddies from the military were shocked to hear about it. I don't know how to thank you for this. It saved my life."

Blank lost his legs in an explosion in 2006 in Afghanistan, but that wasn't all. In addition to losing his legs, Blank was left with shrapnel in his arm and head, significantly hindering his ability to find work and return to a normal, functional life.

"The world isn't built for people with physical disabilities. It's a harsh truth I've faced every day since my injury," he says. Sinise, who was also injured during his service in Vietnam, understands this daunting feeling. In fact, it's what motivated him to donate 58 such smart homes to other severely injured veterans.

Like the others, Blank's smart home will be custom-fitted to his needs and will be ready within a year. "The new dwelling will be energy efficient, with lighting controllable remotely. Additionally, Blank will be able to enjoy voice-activated technology and a customized kitchen," say the engineers from Jorgenson Builders, responsible for the planning and construction.
