Social media has rallied around Linor Abargil with a wave of supportive comments following the harsh and offensive criticism of her head covering worn during the torch-lighting ceremony.
The criticism stems from individuals who are expected to represent concepts such as 'cultural pluralism', 'freedom of choice', and 'social solidarity' - like retired judge Oded Eligon. However, the online community did not remain silent in response to his bitter words, speaking out against the severe insult to Abargil's honor, or if you will - the dignity of religious women everywhere.
Many users expressed outrage that if it had been an Arab woman in a hijab officiating the ceremony, those instigators would have responded differently. "Something about the Jewish faith really scares them and brings these sentiments to the surface. Similar to the dreadful stories in Europe," wrote a user named Adva.
"What's wrong with a woman who returned to faith wearing a head covering? That's exactly how it should be," read another comment. "We should respect everyone for who they are. What's wrong with her head covering? Did she murder someone, commit a crime, or steal?" cried another supporter, echoed by more voices: "Unfortunately, it stems from a single motive - an attempt to erase all Jewish symbols 'in the name of enlightenment'." "She represented the people with honor - that's what matters, not trivialities. Publish this because it's important for the people of Israel." "Hypocrites. You've dropped your masks, haters of religious people, right-wingers, and Mizrahim. You're not used to seeing more colors on screen. If the head covering bothers you - imagine if you were in power. Maybe you'd already outlaw wearing a head covering, cut sidelocks, and more...I'm not religious, but these things sting like the city mayor preventing gender segregation at a Chabad party in Rabin Square because those are religious customs."
In response, a significant protest was organized by prominent women in Israeli society, as a sign of support and solidarity with Linor Abargil. Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, for instance, posted the following message on her Facebook page: "Today, a nominee like Judge Eligon would not pass through the gates of the judges' selection committee. Thankfully, his pseudo-enlightened views no longer enter the gates of Israeli society, which condemns them loudly. A truly enlightened society will fight to accommodate a variety of opinions and respect different ways of life, not just the 'right' opinions. Linor, you are a champion. This year's ceremony was especially refreshing and moving."
These sentiments were echoed by attorney Yossi Der, who posted on his Twitter account: "Here comes someone who was once a judge and accuses attorney Linor Abargil in a judgment. You don't need to swallow the entire watermelon to know if it's tasty or not.
When you read Oded Eligon's tweet, you understand what his judgments were composed of when he was a judge. You understand the range of his discretion and how he made decisions regarding the fates of human beings."
