We all recognize the importance of integrating deaf children and adults into mainstream society, but there aren't many programs that teach other children and adults sign language to communicate with the deaf—which is a pity.
If we learned sign language from our preschool years, it would be easier for the deaf to integrate into society without feeling the silence of their world so profoundly.
They may not hear us like we hear each other, but when the language of the heart speaks, ears aren't truly necessary to listen.
A video released three days ago in local Kentucky media quickly went viral on social networks. The video showed four-year-old preschoolers perfectly singing 'Happy Birthday' in sign language to a dedicated deaf worker who has been with the preschool and its neighboring elementary school for over 15 years.
The children prepared for two months for the beautiful tribute to Mr. James, aged 60, and it was undoubtedly one of the most heartwarming surprises anyone has ever given him, even without sounds.
