About two months ago, an unbelievable miracle happened to a 53-year-old French resident. After suffering a cardiac arrest, he lay unconscious for 18 hours by the edge of a frozen river. It happened as he was walking home from his brother's birthday party, suddenly collapsing by the riverbank, only to be found hours later by his worried family.
That evening, the temperature was 10 degrees, and when the medical team arrived, they immediately diagnosed him with severe hypothermia. They began massaging his heart to get blood flowing to his brain.
In hypothermia, organs 'freeze,' so the first priority is to massage the heart to send oxygen to the brain and warm the body enough. Paramedics worked tirelessly performing chest massages for four and a half hours (!) until the man was airlifted to a hospital in another city, where doctors connected him to a device maintaining normal blood flow.
His body temperature initially at 22 degrees rose to 32 degrees—but since the normal temperature for a healthy body should be at least 37, doctors didn’t believe he would survive.
But what happened during his last resuscitation attempt left doctors in awe: defying the icy conditions and against all expectations, the patient's pulse miraculously returned.
"We are amazed by the magnitude of this miracle in this extraordinary medical adventure," said his treating physician. "This man had no chance of waking up, and now he is lying awake in his bed. The medical team is astounded that he survived."
