Recently, a story emerged in the U.S. about a mother and her 11-year-old daughter who were suffering from severe abuse at the hands of the mother's partner. Residents of Louisiana, they were held captive for several years. Fear prevented the mother from filing a complaint with the authorities or contacting the police.
According to reports on CNN, the miraculous event occurred on a seemingly ordinary day when the mother convinced her partner to allow their daughter to attend school as usual, in order not to arouse suspicion from the authorities over her absence. "Their luck was that the mother finally overcame her fears and wrote 'Help me' on a small note," explains Sheriff Jerry Travis.
Determined to end the terrifying saga, the mother asked her daughter to give the note to her teacher. Upon reading the message and seeing the fear in the child's eyes, the teacher immediately contacted the police.
Officers arrived at the trailer where the mother was held captive, but no one answered the door, and they left the scene. Shortly after, the police returned with a search warrant for the premises, and this time they required no special permission.
They entered the home, arrested Donald Ray Guy, who was already known to the police, and moved the mother and daughter to safety. "The mother's resourcefulness and decision to take action were what ultimately brought them to safety just in time," concluded the sheriff.
