"Do you believe in miracles? You should—because they are happening every day, and I am a witness to it," begins Victoria Shields from the U.S. in her viral post.
Shields recently purchased a small fish at WALMART that was in terrible condition, on the verge of losing its tail and fins—apparently due to mistreatment. "I felt heartbroken seeing it in the back of the store. I knew I had to buy it to try to ease its suffering. Its condition couldn't have been worse."
Shields brought it home, but her joy was mixed with concern. "I was sure it was going to die that very night," she recalls. "It looked so miserable and sad."
Compelled by compassion, Shields was determined to help it as much as possible. "That night, I searched Google and read everything I could find about healing abused fish. I started researching thoroughly and consulted top veterinarians about basic medical treatments for it."
Incredibly, thanks to her dedicated care, the miserable fish began to show signs of life and 'bloom' in its new home. "Within a week of health food, medication, daily fresh warm water changes, and plenty of talking to it—its condition started to improve."
And after a month? The before and after pictures speak for themselves: its tail began to regrow, and the fins regained full functionality.
Now, Shields aims to raise awareness about animal abuse, particularly aquarium fish. "Even if we don't hear much about it or are unaware of its existence, it's happening, and it's vital we fight it," she says. "Ornamental fish often endure a lot, like having fluorescent dyes injected to make them look colorful and beautiful. Fishkeeping is one of the most unregulated areas, where any hobbyist can raise fish without being able to provide them minimal living conditions—not to mention real abuse like in this case."
