Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that causes red, scaly patches and various irritations on the skin. In 2013, it was reported that 7.4 million American adults experience its effects, even though it is not a contagious disease.
This is precisely why 31-year-old Julia Apodaca Lane felt shocked and humiliated when she asked for a haircut at a local salon. "I've struggled with psoriasis for years, but after a surgery that eased my symptoms, I decided it was time for a new hairstyle to help me cope with a rough period where I lost all confidence," she explains.
However, moments after sitting down in a Tuscaloosa, Alabama hair salon, her plan shattered. "The stylist lifted my hair and looked at my scalp. When she saw the lesions, she quickly pulled her hand away, made a face of disgust, and asked if it was contagious. I explained that I have psoriasis and it's not contagious, but I was devastated. I ran out crying and couldn't calm down. I felt so humiliated at that moment," Julia writes on her Facebook page. "The stylist made me feel like I was doing something wrong or that something was wrong with me."
Julia’s post quickly captured the attention of the internet, leading to several interviews with local media. "The most hurtful part was the salon's policy allowing employees to refuse service if they believe their health is at risk. I understand that, but what excuse is there to refuse me service when my condition isn’t contagious?"
When asked how she expected the stylist to behave, Julia responded immediately: "We never know what someone else is going through, so we should think before saying or doing something foolish, especially if you serve the public, your job is to smile and be kind. That stylist didn’t know I had surgery or that it was the first time in a long while I left the house. I’m 31 but need a cane, though before surgery, I used a walker which does indicate my condition has improved."
"Precisely because she couldn't have known all of this, all I wanted from her was to be nice. Nothing more, nothing less," concludes Julia.
