Children often don't make the best listeners, especially when it comes to obeying their parents. It's essential to teach them to listen and follow rules, no matter how rebellious they are. But for Kimberly from the U.S., her nine-year-old son Kamdyn's refusal to listen ended up saving her life.
"I complained of mild chest pains but brushed it off. I was sure I needed some rest and everything would pass," Kimberly recalls. But the moment Kamdyn heard this, he refused to let it go. "He put on his shoes, grabbed my bag, and started heading to the car. He said, 'Come on, Mom, let's go. We are going to the hospital now.'"
However, Kimberly was furious.
"I thought to myself, what does he mean we're going to the hospital?! I explained there was no need to panic, that I'm a 'big girl' and know how to take care of myself. I told him it's better to stay home because it's very hot outside, but he insisted. His timing was terrible, so I was mad he wasn't listening to me."
Kamdyn Did Everything Right. He Saved My Life
His childish stubbornness eventually paid off. "I kept telling Mom we needed to go. I put on my shoes and said, 'Come on, let's go,'" Kamdyn recalls. "Finally, she listened, and we left the house."
Believe it or not, Kimberly got into the car with her newborn daughter, just a week old, and drove to her doctor. "At the hospital, the doctors ran some tests and then delivered the shocking news," Kimberly says, wiping away a stray tear. "Both of my lungs were filled with blood clots, likely from the surgery I had. If I had gone to bed instead of to the hospital, I might not be here today."
Kimberly was hospitalized for a week and underwent successful treatment. "My son's stubbornness saved my life, and I'm so grateful for it. After I recovered, I asked him why he was so adamant about going to the doctor, and he told me his teacher, Timothy, had received the same diagnosis and had taught his students the warning signs. Kamdyn remembered the signs and rightly feared, 'the same thing that happened to my teacher might happen to you.'"
Kamdyn's determination and courage proved to be right. So, even though we want to teach, sometimes we need to listen to our children. Listening can surprise us in ways we least expect.
