Across the globe, the issue of children being left in cars has become increasingly prevalent, keeping officers on high alert, especially during the sweltering summer months. In New Hampshire, the recurring incidents have prompted officers to conduct routine patrols in parking lots to ensure no helpless infant is left behind in a locked vehicle.
One such officer, Jason Short from Keene, New Hampshire, was on duty when he received an urgent call about a baby left alone in a car on a very hot day in a Walmart parking lot. "When I got the call, I didn't have my cruiser with me, so I rushed to the scene without thinking about anything else. I was just a few blocks away and I must have run pretty fast because I got there as quickly as I could," he recounted in an interview with local news network WMUR.
According to Jason, upon arriving, he clearly saw a baby wrapped in a blanket, with little legs sticking out. "It was exceptionally hot, and I feared for the baby's life. I didn't know how long the baby had been there, and the small figure looked very pale. I broke the window and gently cradled the baby in my arms, but feared it might already be too late. The baby looked lifeless, with an odd skin tone," he described.
As people gathered to watch, Jason started performing CPR, when he realized something was amiss. Meanwhile, someone had already summoned an ambulance. "It was only while doing CPR that I realized it was actually a doll strikingly identical to a real baby," Jason recalled in the interview.
Moments later, the doll's owner, a woman named Carolyn, arrived with many shopping bags. She was shocked to see the crowd around her car. As she looked at the broken window, she immediately understood what had happened and apologized for the confusion. "It's a doll named Ainsley that I purchased for about $2,000 to cope with my own baby's passing," she explained to the onlookers.
In a later interview with The Washington Post, Carolyn shared that she owns about 40 such dolls. These were recommended by her psychologist to help her deal with the grief and personal sorrow following her baby's death.
"It's amazing that people find such creative ways to cope with their grief," Jason commented upon hearing Carolyn's unique story. "At the very least, I'm relieved I was there in time, just in case it had been a real baby."
