For 19 days, Sam Hemming from Hertfordshire, England, lay in a coma. As a law student, her whole life was ahead of her, anticipating the day she'd start her career as a young attorney.
In an instant, everything changed. Sam's car collided head-on with another vehicle, and she was ejected through the windshield over a significant distance. Medical teams rushed her to the hospital with multiple fractures; although she survived, doctors had little hope that she would actually pull through.
Sam underwent surgery and never woke up, falling into a coma for 19 days. When it seemed like nothing would change, she was declared brain dead, and her parents were asked to consider removing life support. "It was the hardest decision we've ever had to make in our lives," Sam's mother explained. "I weighed it heavily and ultimately decided that if the doctors had no hope, there was no point in waiting. I realized it was the right step I could take for Sam."
The day finally arrived, and Sam's family gathered around her bed, tensely waiting to follow through with their decision. But then something incredible happened: just minutes before the doctors were to turn off the machines, one noticed movement under Sam's blanket, around her feet. "Sam moved her toes and shortly after opened her eyes," the doctors reported. "It's a medical miracle with no explanation, given that half of Sam's brain was completely destroyed in the crash."
"From that moment, a journey began that I can't describe in words," Sam's mother explained in an interview with local media SWNS. "With lots of help and hard work, she gradually relearned how to walk and talk. There's still a long road ahead, but I'm happy that Sam is in an entirely different place and still dreams of finishing her law degree to become a lawyer. She doesn't lose hope, and that's what makes us happiest."
