Of all the different reactions to Donald Trump's election as president, this might be the most bizarre. An American group calling themselves the 'Witch Community' is urging its members to perform a monthly 'binding spell' until the president is removed from office.
According to a set of instructions being shared within the community, and which has amused some American journalists, the spell must be performed at midnight on every new moon night for it to be successful.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, a spokesperson for the group, Michael Hughes, insisted that it was not a spell intended to 'cause harm' but rather to 'set a limit' – in other words, to prevent Trump from continuing his presidency.
As a testament to the dislike many Americans feel towards Trump, the spell instructions have gone viral, and a special Facebook group was established for everyone wishing to perform the spell, which is not easy. To carry it out, Hughes says, a long list of items is needed, including... a bad picture of Trump.
Does Hughes truly believe that meaningless mutterings over a picture of Trump are what it takes to bring about a change in American leadership? In an interview, he admitted it isn't certain that the spell actually works – after all, it was invented by people with no history of supernatural powers... But, he added optimistically, there's no doubt that casting the spell will at least help Trump's opponents feel "less defeated," he says.
It's probably safe to bet that President Trump isn’t losing sleep over the bundle of spells expected to be cast against him.
