Maryland Teacher Fired Over Lighthearted Correction on Twitter

Maryland, USA: A teacher was terminated from her position after she corrected a student's spelling mistake and was accused of 'insensitivity towards a student.'

A high school student in Maryland tweeted on the school's Twitter account, "Please cancel school tammarow." Katie Nash, a young teacher responsible for managing the school's social media, noticed the student's typo, writing "Tammarow" instead of "tomorrow". She humorously responded with, "But then how would you learn how to spell: tomorrow?"

The witty tweet garnered thousands of likes and positive feedback. However, to Nash's surprise, the school administration viewed it as mocking the student. Days after the tweet, the administration informed Nash she would no longer oversee the school's social media. Hours later, she was shocked to receive a final notification of her dismissal.

The student claimed he was not offended by Nash's comment and even provided proof by showing their continued exchange of tweets. Nash, on her part, defended her tweets on Twitter, showing they were inoffensive. Nevertheless, nothing helped. The school administration argued Nash corrected the student's mistake insensitively, prompting her termination.

In an interview with the "Frederick News Post," Nash stated she had never received guidance to maintain a serious tone on Twitter. She added, "As a new employee, I assumed if I made a mistake or acted in a way not appreciated by the administration, I would receive feedback and have the opportunity to improve my performance. I never thought one tweet would lead to my dismissal."
