It all began about a year ago, when the parents of an eight-year-old girl named Isis from Australia had to reach out to the media, pleading with parents everywhere: 'Please tell your children to stop teasing our daughter because of her name.' Ever since the terrorist group ISIS became prominent, the name Isis has become a source of fear for children (especially girls), given its unfortunate association. Isis' parents from Australia went so far as to ask the media to refer to the terrorist group by another name.
Now, 14-year-old Isis Brown from Oklahoma is also reaching out to the global community. In a Facebook video, Brown shares the daily harassment she faces from fellow students. 'Kids stop me during breaks and ask why I want to kill Americans,' she recounts in the video, tears streaming down her face. 'How can you say that? I'm American too, just like you.'
In closing, Isis offers an empowering message to all children who share the name of the Egyptian goddess: 'At least remember, you weren't named after a terrorist organization.'
