Elliott, a six-year-old with autism, is well-known to his mother, Lauren, for his occasional meltdowns. She tries to avoid situations that might upset him and doesn't panic when they occur.
Lauren shared an emotional post on her Facebook page, describing an incident at a restaurant where Elliott had a meltdown and how the owner reacted: "I should have known it would happen. I shouldn’t have taken him out for pancakes after the dentist, but he wanted them so badly... We were at the restaurant, waiting for the pancakes. All of a sudden, Elliott remembered he forgot something at home, and in seconds, he was in full autistic meltdown mode." The outburst involved shouting, screaming, and lying on the floor.
Lauren took Elliott outside to calm him down. When the pancakes arrived, they went back inside. Elliott ate and calmed down. The surprising end to the story came when Lauren asked for the bill.
In response to her request, the restaurant owner handed Lauren a note that read: "Have a wonderful day!! You’re doing a great job. May Hashem bless you!" It was signed by "A mother who understands," and she also covered the cost of their meal.
The owner's compassionate gesture deeply moved Lauren. "I cried, she cried, and we hugged," she relates. And what did Elliott do? "He said to me, 'Hey Mom, can we go home now?'"
