More than a year ago, Elizabeth Diamond, a single mother of four girls, was diagnosed with brain cancer. Throughout her intensive chemo treatments, her main concern was the future of her daughters if she didn’t survive. She shared her fears with her best friend Laura Ruffino, whom she had known since elementary school.
Laura immediately reassured her, promising that if the worst happened, she would take guardianship of all four girls—an assurance she fulfilled. Three months ago, Elizabeth passed away, and true to her word, Laura sought guardianship, which was recently approved. "As Elizabeth's health declined, I was determined to keep my promise and raise her daughters as she wanted. I never imagined this would happen so soon, and it's not how I pictured my life ten years ago. But when life presents you with such a challenge, you just have to take it on and do your best," Laura explained about her newfound family role.
Various organizations have started raising funds to support the family in easing the girls’ transition, even though Laura and her family have not asked for any financial assistance.
