To avoid remembering mid-flight that you left something important on at home, here are some crucial things to check off your list before departure.
1. Electricity – It's recommended to disconnect all electric devices and leave only the refrigerator plugged in. For both safety and economy, leaving appliances on in an empty house can be risky. For example, a solar water heater might burst.
2. Water and Gas – Make sure to turn off the main gas valve as well as the main water valve.
When you return from your vacation and open the valve, do it slowly. This helps prevent any particles or rust from rushing through the pipes. If you have a water filtration system, make sure to discard about 10 cups of both cold and hot water before drinking, as the water has been sitting for days.
3. Guard Against Theft – An overflowing mailbox is a clear signal to burglars that no one is home. Arrange for a neighbor to collect your mail.
Additionally, lock all home entrances, including top locks and balcony access points.
Another key tip is to keep your travel plans to yourself. Avoid sharing vacation details via emails or social media to keep potential intruders in the dark.
4. Finish Chores and Empty the Fridge – The day before leaving is not the time to start a load of laundry. Ensure no clothes are left wet in the machine to prevent mildew. Don’t leave food in the sink or dishwasher and empty the trash cans. If you have perishables in the fridge, don't leave them behind to spoil.
And most importantly – have a great vacation!
