Here's a list of the essential tools for the challah ritual:
- Ingredients for the dough, according to the recipe
- Fine mesh sieve
- Mixer, or a large bowl if you plan to knead by hand (don't worry, the dough will turn out just as well!)
- Rolling pin
- Baking pans – preferably made of metal, not disposable
- Baking paper
- Brush for applying egg wash
- Recommended: A pitcher or container sized at 1-2 liters (depending on the dough amount) – to prepare all the water needed for gradual mixing, instead of measuring cup by cup. This method prevents confusion in counting cups of water.
- Aluminum foil if you burn the separated challah, or two plastic bags if you discard the piece.
- Order of the challah separation, including the blessing, supplications, and prayers for the ritual.
Now that we have the equipment, we can begin making the dough, both physically and spiritually: kneading, rising, braiding, and baking, alongside prayers and intentions at every stage.
