Shavuot is around the corner, the perfect time to fill your home with beautiful, fragrant flowers. To keep your blooms fresh throughout the holiday, it's important to care for them properly from the start. Here's how.

Even if you're not someone who regularly buys flowers for Shabbat and holidays, there's a good chance you'll have a large bouquet on Shavuot. Decorating the home with flowers in honor of receiving the Torah is a beloved tradition, but not everyone knows how to maintain the flowers so they stay fresh and vibrant. That's why we've put together a short and practical guide to help your flowers bring joy throughout the holiday and beyond:

1. Trim the Stems

Bought flowers from a nearby shop or a street stall? They usually come wrapped in paper or cellophane. It's important to remove this wrapping and not place the flowers in water with it. Next, cut the ends of the stems at a 45-degree angle, allowing the flowers to absorb more water and stay fresh. How to cut them? It's best to use sharp scissors, not a knife.

2. Arrange Them

After trimming the stem ends, it's time to arrange them. Pay attention to the size of the vase you use. Don't put a large bouquet in a water glass, and don't place a single rose in a huge vase. A vase that's too small causes overcrowding, which might crush and twist the flowers. Conversely, an overly large vase can make the flowers disperse in an unorganized and unaesthetic way. Choose a vase that suits the number and type of flowers, so each bloom has enough space and water.

How to Arrange?

To create a beautiful and balanced arrangement, start with the large, central flowers, and then add smaller flowers and greenery around them. This way, you can create a harmonious and stunning floral arrangement that will perfectly adorn your holiday table.

3. Light Them Up

Flowers need proper lighting conditions. Place the vase in a well-lit area, but not in direct, harsh sunlight that can dry out the flowers. Positioning the bouquet in a well-lit area will highlight the colors and unique shape of each bloom.

In the evening or in rooms with less lighting, you can use soft artificial lighting to add warmth and a calming atmosphere to the space. Proper lighting not only emphasizes the bouquet's beauty but also creates a pleasant and festive ambiance in the home. With the right lighting, the bouquet can become the center of attention, adding a touch of nature and life to any room, especially your holiday table.
