Is There an Obligation to Hear the Megillah Reading in the Synagogue with the Largest Congregation?
It is a mitzvah to read the Megillah with a large gathering, and therefore we set aside Torah study to hear the Megillah reading. However, if there are disturbances in the synagogue, one may read it with just ten people.
Similarly, if there is a sick person in the city, it is a mitzvah for ten people to go and read the Megillah with him, even though there won't be a large gathering [Yalkut Yosef p. 308].
Just as the mitzvah of reading the Megillah should preferably be done with a large gathering, the same applies to the mitzvah of the Purim feast, which should also be held with many people [Yalkut Yosef p. 311].
