Understanding the amount you need to eat to require a final blessing (from "Daily Halacha" by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ztz"l):
For anything a person eats, they must say an initial blessing, such as "Shehakol" or "Ha'etz". Even if the portion is small, a blessing is required if the intention is to eat it. (However, if the purpose is just to taste the food in order to adjust seasoning, no blessing is needed.) For example, chewing flavored gum requires a blessing even if consuming only a small amount due to enjoyment from its taste. Similarly, one must bless before drinking, even if it is just a sip.
However, this rule applies only to the initial blessing. A final blessing is only said when the amount consumed is considered "significant", known as a "kezayit", equivalent to 27 grams. For drinks, the required amount is "a revi'it", which is 81 grams.
Additionally, eating or drinking must occur within a timeframe where the consumption adds up, since eating a "kezayit" of bread gradually throughout the day doesn’t justify saying the Grace After Meals. The entire "kezayit" must be consumed within the time it takes to eat "a pras"—a period debated among scholars, with estimates ranging from five to seven and a half minutes (with various opinions). It's prudent to eat a "kezayit" (particularly during Shabbat meals) within four and a half minutes to satisfy all perspectives.
Regarding drinks, one must consume a revi'it (81 grams) in one go to qualify for a final blessing. If sips are taken with pauses in between, no final blessing is required. Thus, sipping soup with a spoon doesn’t warrant a final blessing since it doesn't involve drinking a revi'it in one session. Similarly, with hot coffee or tea, no final blessing is necessary because they aren't consumed in one draught.
