A century ago, most scientists believed that the universe was infinite and eternal, with endless stars and planets existing unchanged forever. This was known as the "Steady State Theory" or simply "the Static Universe."
This theory was fundamentally disproved with the launch of the advanced "Hubble" space telescope (named after the famous astronomer Edwin Hubble), which revealed for the first time that all galaxies are moving away from us.
This phenomenon, called "Redshift," occurs because distant galaxies appear redder as they move rapidly away. Observations show that the entire universe is expanding, with galaxies drifting apart like drawings on an inflating balloon. In other words, it was discovered that the universe is in fact "aging," thus it has an age.
The expansion of the universe proves that in the past it was younger and smaller - when galaxies were closer together, united.
Going back to the beginning of time, it was found that all the materials in the universe were concentrated in a very tiny point, known to scientists as the "singular point."
This point existed for less than a fraction of a second due to its immense density. Mathematical calculations show that from the moment this point first appeared, it immediately expanded with an incredible initial light, poetically called the "Big Bang."
But the Big Bang isn't an explosion, nor is it a random event like an explosion. It describes the very rapid expansion of the universe from that dense point, based on pre-calculated and precise mathematical natural laws (the strong and weak nuclear forces, electromagnetic force, and gravity). In fact, we are still within that expanding point. Consider this idea: the entire universe was once smaller than the head of a pin!
Additional findings, like cosmic background radiation, corroborate this fact: the entire universe was created from nothing, with an initial burst of light: "Let there be light!"
However, long before these modern scientific discoveries, the Torah and its sages revealed this. Rashi explains that the first thing created was the light. Ramban described how the whole universe was created from initial material - concentrated primordial matter, and explained that from it Hashem made all the galaxies and stars. After thousands of years, modern science reached this exact conclusion. One scientist compared this surprising discovery to a tedious climb up a tall mountain, only to find at its peak a group of wise elders who already knew the secrets of the universe thousands of years before him.
What Existed Before the Big Bang?
Science has proven that the entire universe appeared at a specific point in time and did not always exist, meaning that before the universe there was no matter, space, or time—in simple terms, nothingness.
Since there was no matter before the universe, science cannot answer the question "What preceded the universe?"

Unlike what many people mistakenly think—before the universe there was no "darkness" or vast space. In fact, there wasn't even room for a pin! The universe did not exist, so there was no space. There was no color and no absence of color.
When there is no matter, there are no changes. Nothingness is a fixed state, with no causes and effects because there is nothing that can cause change or be changed. Nothingness is actually a very simple concept. It is the absence of matter and motion.
In nothingness - nothing happens.
This fact points to a Creator who preceded the universe and is not confined by the boundaries of matter and time:
1. Because before the universe there was no matter and energy, it is proven that the Creator of the universe is not made of matter or energy. In other words: His existence is non-material, meaning: He is supernatural.
2. Since before the universe there was no space, it is proven that the Creator of the universe is not limited to space, meaning He is infinite. He is equally present everywhere, without boundaries or divisions. His existence is infinite without limit, He is absolutely one.
3. Since before the universe there was no motion and flow of time (past, present, or future), it is proven that the Creator of the universe is not dependent on time. There is no movement or change in His existence, meaning: He is eternal.
4. The Creator is omnipotent, as He essentially created everything; He possesses all powers.
In this article, we saw scientific proof of the existence of Hashem from the creation of the 'Big Bang': science proved that the universe appeared at a certain point in time and did not always exist. Since the universe had a beginning, and every beginning must have a Beginner, the existence of a Creator outside the limits of matter, space, and time is proven, an infinite and eternal Creator who created the universe from nothing.
The first verse in the Torah describes the creation of the universe: "In the beginning (creation of time), Hashem created the heavens (the creation of space) and the earth (the creation of matter-energy)." This verse describes how in one moment matter, energy, space, and time were created (Ramban calls this primordial material "initial matter"). Today, 3300 years after the Book of Genesis was given to Israel in the desert of Sinai, science discovered this.
What is an Atom?
All materials in nature are made from the same basic building blocks, known as atoms. The different combinations of these building blocks create different materials, similar to identical Lego pieces that can build a building or a car.
What particles comprise the atom? The nucleus of the atom is made of two types of particles, called neutrons and protons, while the particles that orbit around the nucleus are called electrons. The nucleus is so tiny in the atom that it can be compared to an ant in a football field. All that creates the "field" is the rapid motion of electrons.

So, the atom is essentially composed of very tiny particles moving at incredible speeds. This motion creates the illusion of volume, size, and shape. Think of a fan with three thin blades; when spinning, every spot you try to touch feels "solid." The rapid movement of particles creates the atoms, and all solid-appearing and -feeling materials. [It's worth noting as an aside that this model is only an illustration. Quantum mechanics describes electrons as a 'cloud,' a magnetic energy field, so their position in space is measured probabilistically. The electron's rotation is essentially intrinsic - without it, the electron would not exist!].
This means that the massive stars are primarily made from mere motion and vibration (energy fields) that create the illusion of magnitude and quantity.
The number of atoms is staggering; even a tiny grain of sand is composed of more than 20 trillion atoms. Despite their immense number, if all the particles in the universe stopped their rapid motion even for a moment, they could all be compressed to the size of a pea.
What are the Laws of Nature?
The laws of nature describe the motion (attraction and repulsion) of different materials in nature, which due to their consistency can be mathematically calculated and predicted. For example, the consistent motion of particles is a "natural law." However, science has not truly discovered a "law" in nature, but merely identified some behavior that repeats itself for an unknown reason, and labeled it.
There are four natural laws in the universe: "the strong nuclear force" and "the weak nuclear force," which describe the consistent motion of particles in the atom; the "electromagnetic/electric force," which describes the attraction and repulsion of particles, responsible for chemical reactions and the creation of different materials in nature; and "gravity" which draws and locks smaller masses into larger ones.
Gravity is an invisible attractive force that operates throughout the universe, linking different bodies in space and pulling them toward each other in a consistently calculable manner. A small mass like the moon is drawn to a larger mass like Earth. Thanks to gravity, humans are pulled toward the Earth's center and don't float into space.
Science does not truly understand what the laws of nature are, and cannot explain them.
The president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Professor Charles M. Vest, explains in his 1995 report that "natural laws" are merely synonyms for a mysterious and incomprehensible force in our universe. He wrote: "We do not understand what mechanism produces mass in the fundamental building blocks of matter."
Those who understand this reach a fascinating conclusion.
Science has essentially proven that right now there is 'lawfulness' in nature, the rapid movement of particles [magnetic fields], without which the universe would revert to chaos and disappear. But there is no rational reason to mandate the perpetual activity of these laws of nature. This motion of particles and materials in the universe is a supernatural force, irrational and reasonless.
This indirectly proves the existence of constant Divine providence in nature. Hashem controls the universe even at this moment, establishing the laws and sustaining them as "renews every day, continuously, the work of creation." Without His constant providence, nothing would mandate the continuation and lawfulness in the world, and the universe would simply revert to chaos, like a computer program that won't continue to operate without a constant power supply.
The very existence of "natural laws," the consistent motion of particles and materials, is a testimony to the Divine control in the universe. This control is not temporary: when we look at what exactly these "laws" do, we find additional evidence of Divine design, as the laws of nature do not move materials randomly, but in a calculated manner that imbues order and organization in nature: atoms, molecules, galaxies, stars, and planets, the water cycle, ozone, oxygen, and more, are all extremely complex mathematical systems. This wisdom is a scientific fact and constitutes further logical proof of intentional design in the universe.
Einstein received a Nobel Prize for a specific discovery within one of the laws of nature (the discovery of the photoelectric effect of the electromagnetic law), and because of his understanding, he was considered one of the smartest people of the 20th century. If understanding alone earns Nobel Prizes, then certainly whoever is behind the planning and creation of the mathematics of the laws of nature is much wiser than any human.
In conclusion, we saw here two scientific proofs for the existence of Hashem: the first, the very fact that there is perpetual and consistent motion in nature [magnetic fields without which matter would vanish] - indicating Divine providence renewing the world at every moment, without which the universe would revert to chaos, and the second, because this lawfulness does not function randomly, but in a planned mathematical way creating the complexity of the world and all the wonders of creation.
"For thus said Hashem, the Creator of the heavens, He is Hashem, the Maker of the earth and its Maker, He established it, He did not create it for chaos, He formed it to be inhabited, I am Hashem, and there is none else" (Isaiah 45:18).
