A Great Light Lost | Rabbi Berel Wein’s Message for Elul
Rabbi Daniel Glatstein
We have lost a giant, Rabbi Berel Wein — a clear thinker, straight shooter, and beloved teacher. In his memory, we share one of his powerful teachings on the month of Elul. Elul is more than a month of return — it is both love and introspection. On one side, “Ani L’Dodi V’Dodi Li” reminds us that Hashem loves us and welcomes us back with open arms. But there is also the counterbalance: Elul demands self-examination, responsibility, and finding the place Hashem gave us — in our own hearts. Love must be balanced with responsibility, and Elul is that gift.
