Mesilat Yesharim – Chapter 8

Rabbi Guy Matalon

In Chapter 8, the Ramchal turns to the trait of Nekiyut (cleanliness/purity of character). This means being free not only from obvious sins, but also from subtle and hidden faults that people often rationalize or overlook. While Zehirut (watchfulness) prevents a person from committing open transgressions, Nekiyut demands a deeper level of refinement cleansing one’s actions, thoughts, and intentions from even the smallest traces of wrongdoing. It is a higher stage of spiritual growth that requires honesty with oneself and constant inner examination.
