South Korea: A student from Seoul University recently made headlines for eating a banana that was displayed as part of a high-end art installation, sold for $120,000.
The artist, 62-year-old Maurizio Cattelan from Italy, showcased the work at the 'Leum' Art Museum in South Korea.
"I was hungry," the student innocently explained when asked why he removed and ate the banana, which was taped to the wall.
Think he's the first? Believe it or not, this is the second time such an incident has happened with this piece. Back in 2019, at the Art Basel Miami Beach, a man named David Datuna shocked the world when he decided to dramatically remove and eat the banana from the wall.
Why does the artist continue to present this work? It's unclear.
Who purchased the piece for $120,000? Even less clear: a private collector who chose to stay anonymous.
Datuna back then called the experience "The Hungry Artist".
The museum spokesperson where the artwork was displayed said, "It happened suddenly, so we didn't take any special action. We had no comment on it."
Will someone now decide to impose a sanction on the student? Time will tell.
