a question

Hello and blessings, I have a smartphone with a "prayer compass" feature that works using GPS. The compass shows two arrows: one for the cardinal directions, such as showing south if I'm in the north, as halacha dictates, and another that points directly to Har Habayit (Temple Mount). Sometimes the arrows point in completely opposite directions, even 180 degrees apart. Which arrow should I follow, the one as Chazal described for the cardinal directions, or the one pointing to Har Habayit? Thank you very much.

Answer

Hello and blessings, Prayers are always directed towards Jerusalem. As mentioned in the Gemara in Berachot, Har Habayit (Temple Mount) is referred to as "Telypios" because it is "a mound to which all mouths face." Even after the destruction, the Shechinah's holiness remains at the site of the Temple, as explained by Alshich on Megillat Eicha, "The Shechinah remains by the Western Wall, where it receives prayers and brings forth deliverance." Therefore, when praying with the Amidah prayer, one should face towards Jerusalem. Across the world, people should aim their prayers towards Jerusalem, as it is written to pray towards the land. In central Israel, such as the Tel Aviv area and surroundings, individuals should pray facing east, where the sun rises. In the northern parts of the Tel Aviv area, one should face slightly southeast, while from areas east of Jerusalem, like Jericho, the direction is west, where the sun sets. In the northern part of the country, one prays southward, and in the south, one prays northward. A wonderful method to determine south and east, and thus other directions as well, is by looking at the solar heaters on building rooftops, as they are always installed facing south to receive the maximum sunlight. Knowing the south can help you align the other directions. There are also special prayer books by Beit Tefillah-Miller, which include a type of compass on the cover to help people know the direction to face for prayer towards Jerusalem, no matter their location. For those unable to determine the accurate direction for prayer, it is permissible to pray in any direction, provided one's heart is directed towards their Father in Heaven, as ruled in Shulchan Aruch.
