- כ"ה אדר א' התשע"ד
a question
Do I need to say only the Shema prayer and nothing else? I heard there is something called "HaMapil." I would appreciate an answer, thank you.
Answer
Hello and blessings. Here is the "HaMapil" blessing, which indeed should be recited before sleeping. After saying this blessing, one should not speak, eat, or drink, but go to sleep immediately. The wording of the blessing is as follows: Blessed are You, Hashem, our God, King of the universe, who brings down bands of sleep upon my eyes and slumber upon my eyelids. May it be Your will, Hashem, my God and the God of my forefathers, that you lay me down to sleep in peace and raise me up in good life and peace. Grant me my share in Your Torah and accustom me to perform mitzvot. Do not lead me into the power of sin, transgression, or iniquity, and may the good inclination rule over me and not the evil inclination. Save me from evil mishap and disease, and may bad dreams and thoughts not disturb me. May my bed be perfect before You, and enlighten my eyes lest I sleep the sleep of death. Blessed are You, Hashem, who illuminates the entire world with His glory.
