Hundreds of curious online users this week tried to make sense of the mysterious lights that appeared in the night skies over Dallas, Texas.

The puzzling lights were observed changing shape in the sky, hovering above three different counties over an 80-kilometer radius.

The most viral footage came from a photographer named Javier Estrada, who shared, "What I saw still mesmerizes me. I was visiting family for my grandmother's birthday when I happened to look up. I never imagined I would see something like this," he says.

According to Estrada, there were four unusual spots of light in the starless, dark sky. He captured his footage over Duncanville, in the southern part of the city.

"I saw glowing lights that seemed to float slowly in the sky. I knew it was something really out of the ordinary, so I took out my camera and started filming. It wasn't frightening, but it was mind-boggling to watch."

Star experts reviewed Estrada's video along with additional footage posted online and determined they weren't stars.

More than 16,000 viewers watched the videos and offered various theories to solve the mystery. Some speculated they were drones, while others proposed more far-fetched ideas like special Chinese lanterns designed for espionage purposes.
