Five Facts You Didn't Know About the Importance of Protein for Your Body

Balancing hunger, increasing muscle mass, strengthening bones, and reducing cravings - these are just some of the amazing benefits of protein for our bodies

Fish, cheese, meat, and eggs are just part of the list of protein-rich foods that have a direct impact on our mental and physical health. Here are five facts to help increase awareness of protein consumption as part of a balanced and monitored diet that also includes other essential nutrients:

1. Helps Reduce Hunger

Protein is known as the most satiating of all the essential nutrients, and for a good reason: when consumed, it triggers the release of a hormone called Peptide YY in our body, which signals to the brain a sense of fullness, while simultaneously reducing levels of the hunger hormone called ghrelin - thus, the brain receives signals from both on the feeling of fullness. Now it can be at ease for the near future.

2. A Substitution for Snacking

Tempted by unnecessary snacks? You're not alone. But there is a solution: consuming about 20% of your daily allowed calories as protein will make you feel about 350 calories less, and focus on what your body needs rather than what it wants. Prefer main courses of meat and fish over potatoes, rice, and similar foods - and experience an immediate change.

3. Assists in Building and Strengthening Bones

Despite the common myth that excessive protein, especially from animal sources, causes significant damage to bones, the opposite is true. Studies prove that regular and controlled long-term protein consumption greatly benefits consumers and reduces their risk of fractures and osteoporosis (especially after menopause).

4. Increases Fat Burning and Aids Metabolism

High protein consumption has been proven beneficial for metabolic processes as well as calorie burning. In a study conducted in this area, researchers found a link between protein intake and calorie burning, even in situations of overeating.

5. Take Protein - Avoid Stroke

Increasing daily protein intake reduces the likelihood of stroke, heart attack, or kidney disease caused by high blood pressure. Not only does it help balance blood pressure, but protein is also known to help reduce LDL cholesterol as well as triglycerides.
